THE SIGN
It was 2000-2001ish. I had found Concrete to skate at Oelsner YMCA in West Palm Beach, FL. An oddity. 3 concrete bowls, built in the late 90’s, when there were no skateparks being built. Super fun kidney bowl. Crazy big capsule pool with a roll-in channel. A small L-shape mini bowl. And of course there was Stone Edge in Daytona and KONA in Jacksonville…
So the old guys from the innernets decided to go skate the epic concrete in fl. This was in the days before the dogtoon movie…the few skaters out there skating were, well…skaters. They came from near and far.
Skaters from the north got delayed by the snow. Go figure.
So we had to hang out overnite in theATL. We met the others and went out for dinner and out drankin and stuff. Heh heh heh…
We stumbled next door to crash at the local hotel.
We arrived at the hotel, only to be greeted by bullet-proof glass and a friendly staff, happy to double bill your card. I guess they thought we were clueless old guys who got trashed at the strip club next door.
Yeah. Whatever.
We went to see the hotel’s pool in the morning. Perfect shape…Except it was filled with skuzzy water. There was a classic “POOL CLOSED” sign guarding the pool. The sign came with us. And we were on the way to FLA. With hangovers…
Quite a few years later, the pool became a big session spot. There was even concrete work done to make the transitions better…
Lance Mountain came to skate the pool and made a big fuss and stuff and got the place shut down. The article’s in the thrasher magazine I left at the shop.
Anyway, the POOL CLOSED sign travelled around and adorned several Athens skate spots.
Most recently, it stayed at the skateshop , protecting the employee area from invaders…
As an era ends, the sign still speaks volumes.
